Five minutes into this game Narberth broke out of their own twenty two with a sweeping threequarter movement which led to left wing Andrew Jones crossing in the corner for the opening try. Seven minutes later a loose Rumney pass was intercepted and Jones completed another handling movement with a try under the posts. The conversion from outside half Gareth James gave the visitors a twelve point lead and they improved on this four minutes later when full back Nic Jones cut through the Rumney defences for another try. With Narberth in devestating form the home side seemed to be facing a heavy defeat but when flanker Ryan Sutton, who had already been supplying good lineout ball and creating problems in the loose, made an excellent interception he linked with hooker Michael Feneck who in turn released lock Michael Kelly for a fine long range try. Outside half Carl Ford's touchline conversion brought the score to 7 - 17 and following more good lineout possession from Sutton and strong drives from the pack, Ford sliced through the Narberth midfield and set up a ruck from which lock Chris Jones snapped up the ball and collected a good opportunist try. The Rumney defence was now noticeably tighter and Narberth attacks were tending to break down, allowing No8 Paul Bull and centre Anthony Jones to counterattack down the middle of the field. James kicked a penalty for Narbeth bringing the half to a close with the score at Rumney 14 Narberth 20.
Two minutes after the restart Ford kicked a penalty and soon livewire scrum half Ben Morris broke through the opposition, taking play into the Narberth twenty two. From the resulting lineout and maul Chris Jones worked the open side and went over for his second try, Ford's conversion taking Rumney into the lead at 24 - 20. After sixty five minutes Ford was replaced by Larry Feneck and Andrew McCormack came on for Chris Jones. With less than ten minutes remaining, Narberth applied persistent foward pressure and regained the lead when a sweeping movement drew in the home defence allowing Nic Jones to cross for his hat trick. Almost immediately a loose clearance gave Narberth the chance to attack again and centre Elgan Vittle scored another try, converted by James. Larry Feneck had been causing problems for the visitors since he came on and one of his breaks set winger Henry Amafide loose and nearly resulted in a score, but in injury time it was Feneck himself who intercepted a pass and sprinted under the posts to touchdown. Morris's conversion brought Rumney to within one point of the visitors but there was insufficient time to improve on the score, which remained at 31 - 32.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "After a very poor opening twenty minutes and allowing Narberth to score three tries, the team decided to start playing rugby. We competed for every scrap of ball and were in contention at 20 -14 at the interval. The game was played at a furious pace with both sides trying to play expansive rugby. We deservedly went into the lead when good lineout possession resulted in a try, bringing the score to 24- 20. This was short lived when sustained pressure brought a try for the visitors and soon after they breached our defence once again. The squad showed great character and played with great determination and could have won the game but eventually lost 32 - 31. Man of the Match for Rumney was Paul Bull."
Dave Escott, Rumney RFC : "Another game we could have won. You would expect a side which has travelled seventy miles from West Wales to start slowly but we managed to give Narberth a 17 point start in the opening minutes ! It was extremely disappointing to lose by one point and in the short term we are struggling but with so many of the squad having come up through our youth system, we are confident that things will level out and we will be stronger rather than weaker. All we need now is something which we haven't had yet this season, a bit of luck. Every one of the forwards played very well and Paul Bull, Chris Jones and Neil Coles had outstanding games. It was also amazing to see father and son Larry and Michael Feneck playing for Rumney in the same game."
