In a scrappy opening period, Tondu exerted most pressure and camped in the Rumney twenty two where they were awarded a close range penalty. They chose to run the penalty and were held up on the line where referee Hugh Griffiths awarded Rumney a penalty for holding on. On his own line, home scrum half Ben Morris tapped and went, feeding outside half Danny Clark, who supplied centre Paul Niblett and left wing Dan Clements. With seventy five metres still to go, Clements hit top speed and burned off tacklers to race the full distance to the try line. Clark's conversion gave Rumney a 7 - 0 lead after ten minutes and with the forwards gaining more control, Morris was unlucky to be stopped short of the line after a dazzling handling movement. Handling errors and conceding turnovers were costing Rumney dear and many scoring chances were missed before winger Paddy O'Neill took a difficult, loose kick and set off on a counterattack, linking with Clark, lock Michael Kelly, Morris, full back Matthew Milsom and finally No8 Stuart Coles who thundered twenty five metres for an excellent try, leaving four tacklers on the ground behind him. The increasing assertiveness of the pack allowed Rumney to make further attacks and when Tondu were judged to have deliberately brought down a scrum, Mr Griffiths had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try. The visitors continued to offer stern opposition and in another period of sustained pressure, Tondu outside half Dean Thomas kicked a penalty and dropped a goal to bring about a half time score of 19 - 6.

Three minutes into the second half Rumney produced a superb movement which was started by Clark and centre Stuart McIntyre, carried on by Morris, lock Anthony Jones and Coles, before slick passing by prop Matthew Gee, Milsom and Niblett set up Carl Barker with the scoring pass. The home forwards were now dominating up front and pushing the opposition back in the set scrums, and with Morris skillfully using the stream of possession, Clark and Milsom worked the ball to winger Ian McIntyre who set off on a long run to the line, breaking four tackles and putting his side ahead by 31 - 6. Rumney youth team winger Joey Offside took to the field and proved to be particularly elusive, taking play back into the Tondu half and winning a scrum on the twenty two, from which the powerful Coles picked up and drove forward again, connecting with replacement fly half Carl Ford, Barker and Jones, before Jones' well timed pass put flanker Ryan Sutton in for a converted try. Scrappy play from both sides led to many set pieces but with Coles continuing to drive upfield, in the seventieth minute Kelly, Suton and Jones gained good second phase possession and centre Niblett took full advantage to slice through for an excellent try and a final score of 43 - 6.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A game where both sides took something to the table. The early stages saw Tondu exert pressure but resolute defending prevented them scoring. The Rumney performance was very stop start, although we always looked the better side, we appeared to be forcing passes in wrong positions and made far too many errors. We must pull the positives out of the performance as some very good rugby was played. The Rumney Man of the Match was Prop Mathew Gee. We now move on to our game with Tredegar."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "When we were good we were good and when we were bad we were very bad indeed. Rumney never established any rhythm and ironically, we have played much better and lost games."
