Rumney's lighter but more mobile forwards dominated the game and their early, non-stop counterattacking forced Tredegar into errors. When a defensive lapse allowed home centre Paul Niblett to pounce and score the opening try, captain Adam Harding put over the conversion and established a 7 - 0 lead after eleven minutes. Winger Ian McIntyre was unlucky not to score after he scythed through the opposition on a long run, but the Rumney backs were now showing their potential and frequently launching attacks into the visitors' half. In the twenty fifth minute Tredegar outside half Matthew Perry kicked a penalty and although his side pressed for long periods, they were still forced into errors. After half an hour's play flanker Ryan Sutton took clean lineout possession for Rumney and although outside half Harding's pass seemed to be loose, it was collected in midfield by flanker Neil Coles who battered his way through three tackles to score a fine try. Harding converted but just before the interval Perry kicked another penalty resulting in a half time score of 14 - 6.

From the restart Rumney launched further attacks and Tredegar indiscipline led to a lineout on their five metre line. Lock Wayne Feneck gathered and a strong forward drive resulted in second row Michael Kelly crossing for a try. Ten minutes into the second half and the home side consolidated their lead when, from a set scrum, scrum half Ben Morris's fast pass put Chris Miller into space and a superb looping movement with centre Stuart McIntyre saw Miller make a devestating, sweeping break to cross in the corner for an outstanding try. The Rumney pack continued to dominate with Ryan Sutton causing many problems for the visitors, and unstoppable No8 Carl Barker being replaced with the equally powerful Stuart Coles. The pace of Morris and Miller created confusion for the visitors and from loose play Morris fed lock Michael Kelly who slipped tacklers and deceived defenders as the Lloyds TSB Division One Player of the Month forced his way between their ranks and broke away for his second try. In the seventieth minute Morris's unexpected switch from a scrum again gave Miller room to manoeuver and the outside half's excellently timed pass created a gap for centre McIntyre to burst through for a very well taken try. As the final whistle approached, a loose Tredegar clearance was collected by Neil Coles in his own half and the movement he started saw brilliant interpassing by Morris, Niblett and Sutton before the touchdown was completed with a twenty five metre sprint by jet propelled prop Matthew Gee. Gee's try was Rumney's seventh of the game and Mr David's whistle concluded the match with the score at 39 - 6.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A very accomplished performance from the squad. The boys stuck to the game plan and played some very positive rugby. Our forward platform allowed the Rumney three-quarters the opportunity to exploit the Tredegar back line. A few of our younger players are coming to terms with First Division rugby and this win will give them added confidence. The Rumney back row of Carl Barker, Neil Coles and Ryan Sutton worked tirelessly, it was also great to see loose head prop Mathew Gee score a well deserved try. We now look forward to our trip to Brynmawr on Saturday. The Rumney Man of the Match award went to Ryan Sutton.

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Youth overcame experience in the end and although Tredegar's pack tried to control the game, Rumney's tenacious, young forwards got on top for an excellent win. The front row was very effective, Carl Barker was outstanding at No8 and it is pleasing to see lock Wayne Feneck returned to full match fitness. Alec McIntyre made his 1st XV debut where he joined his cousins Ian and Stuart to bring the McIntyre representation up to twenty percent of the team. I thought it was a god win, we've got it all in front of us for next season."
