The opening exchanges of the match were fairly even with the heavier Whitland pack tending to peg Rumney back in their own half, but with both sides missing kicks to touch and giving away penalties there was little to separate the sides. After twenty minutes a Whitland penalty gave them a lineout on the home twenty two, from which they set up a slow rolling maul allowing flanker John Bowen to touch down for the opening try and the conversion by outside half Eifion Roberts. Within five minutes Rumney had struck back; when No8 Carl Barker set up the last of a series of rucks scrum half Ben Morris released the backs and outside half Adam Harding found prop David Bartlett speeding up to take the ball and send out a good long pass to full back Paddy O'Neill who raced in to score at the corner. It took another ten minutes before Rumney added to their score, this time it came from a scrum on the half way line. Morris's quick delivery found Harding in space and the outside half's pass to Paul Niblett saw the centre cut through the Whitland defence and link with co-centre Anthony Jones. Jones fed Barker and more rapid, clever passing from flanker Ryan Sutton and hooker Michael Feneck put mobile second row Michael Kelly away to finish off a brilliant try. With half time approaching and leading 10 - 7, a lapse in the Rumney defence let in Roberts for a close range try which he also converted, and within minutes they conceded another penalty, allowing Roberts to find touch on the home side's five metre line. From the lineout Whitland again adopted their favoured tactic of the rolling maul and this time flanker Stuart Tirie touched down for the try. Robert's conversion gave his side a 10 - 19 half time lead.
Rumney gave away further penalties after the interval and with their defence inreasingly stretched, opposition centre Matthew Hughes broke through to score an unconverted try. The Whitland forwards were becoming more dominant but good lineout possession by Sutton and breaks by prop Peter Tennet and Barker kept the home side in contention until Whitland flanker Paul Morgan entered a threequarter movement, crossing for a try and Rumney full back Paddy O'Neill was sent off for dissent. In the sixty fifth minute the visitors went further ahead through a converted try from centre Lee Glanville, followed by an individual kick and rush score by right winger Emyr Davies and a final converted try by left wing Jack Tremlett.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We competed well during the first half and played some constructive rugby. During this period we scored two very good tries. The second half proved to be a very different game with Whitland taking full advantage of our indiscipline, which resulted in them winning the game convincingly. Rumney's Man of the Match was prop Mathew Gee. My congratulations to Michael Kelly who was voted the Lloyds TSB League Division One Player of the Month. He fully deserves this award for his commitment and hard work since making the transition from Youth to Senior rugby. I would also like to give Peter Tennet my very best wishes for his future rugby career, as he returns to his home town. He has been a valued member of the squad at Rumney RFC and will be an asset to any side."
Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Although Whitland deserved to win, there was very little between the teams until the last fifteen minutes, when Rumney were reduced to fourteen men and they became exposed in defence. Whitland then ran riot, they are a very good side."

Peter came to Rumney RFC in August 2003 and quickly settled in, becoming an excellent acquisition to the First XV squad. He is developing into an outstanding player but is now returning home to South Shields. Everyone at the club misses Peter and wishes him good luck in the future, he will always be welcome here and hopefully will return to play for Rumney again.
