Skilful handling and powerful forward drives created seven tries for Rumney who gained their first victory at Pandy Park in more than seven years. A fine handling movement involving scrum half Ben Morris, centres Anthony Jones and Stuart McIntyre and flanker Neil Coles was finished off when winger Paddy O'Neill crossed in the corner after five minutes. Rumney went into a 0 - 8 lead after eight minutes when Tondu were penalised for hands in the loose and visiting outside half Adam Harding kicked the points. A scrappy period followed with plentiful knocks on from both sides and sustained pressure from the Tondu pack, but the Rumney defence held firm and Jones was able to break out and kick his side up to the home try line where they forced a five metre scrum. Props Peter Tennet and Matthew Gee provided a solid platform and quick possession from the scrum saw Harding put winger Ian McIntyre in for a well taken corner try and devestating back row breaks by Neil Coles, Ryan Sutton and Carl Barker soon returned Rumney to the opposition's goal line where Harding charged down a clearance kick and won the race to the touchdown, giving his side a 0 - 18 half time lead.

The second period started with hooker Michael Feneck and Sutton again attacking the Tondu defences and four minutes into the half a clever backflip from Morris to prop Matthew Gee set Sutton off on a run to score under the posts. Within five minutes the elusive Morris was at work again putting Harding in a position to feed Stuart McIntyre with a flat pass which split the defence and the centre sprinted and dummied thirty metres to score. More surging breaks by Coles and locks Michael Kelly and Mark Harrington took Rumney back into opposition territory but Tondu defended well and launched a series of attacks until Stuart McIntyre gathered a loose ball and raced in for his second thirty metre try. Ten minutes from the end Morris took a quick tap penalty and his snap pass found winger Danny Clark ready to force his way over for Rumney's seventh try. Good counterattacking by Neal Ritchie, Craig Walton and full back Matthew Milsom, with Harrington's ability to snap up any loose balls, kept the visitors in control and although winger Henry Amadife was unlucky to be held up over the line, Tondu prevented Rumney from adding any further scores.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A very good performance from the squad who created a number of scoring opportunities. The forwards gave us a great platform to work from and due to this we were able to play an expansive game. I was particularly pleased with the interplay between forwards and backs and as the score would suggest, it proved very successful. In fairness to Tondu they never gave up and it took a strong defensive platform to prevent them scoring. Rumney's Man of the Match was flanker Neil Coles."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "I was very pleased with the result and the fact that we stopped Tondu from scoring, though we did miss several opportunities to create tries. Neil Coles, Matthew Gee and Stuart McIntyre had excellent games."
