After taking the lead in the third minute through a Carl Ford penalty, Rumney suffered an eleven try defeat at the hands of Whitland at Parc Llwyd Ty Gwyn. In the seventh minute the home side took the lead through a try by hooker Jason Evans and followed it up with another two minutes later when a brilliant break by flanker Johnny Koloi put lock Fakatah Molitika in under the posts. Fly half Aled Jenkins converted and in the fifteenth minute full back Gavin Morris crossed in the corner to give Whitland a 17 - 3 lead. From the restart Koloi was given possession and he sprinted the length of the pitch, shrugging off tackles and scoring a brilliant solo try. Rumney kept pressing but their attacks came to nothing and they were finding the heavy Whitland pack increasingly difficult to contain. Twenty five minutes into the half Whitland's left wing Mark Lloyd completed a threequarter movement with a corner try which was converted by Davies to put his side into a 29 - 3 lead and they went further ahead through a close range forward try by captain Phil Morgan, also converted by Davies. The Rumney defence was frequently missing tackles and a late tackle allowed Whitland to establish possession near the try line, from which centre Lee Glanville crossed. Davies' conversion gave the home side a 43 - 3 half time advantage.
Rumney improved in the second half but rarely threatened the Whitland line and their efforts were badly disrupted by the loss through injury of key players Henry Amadife, Carl Ford and Neil Coles. When Rumney attacked, handling errors allowed the opposition to hit back and after sixty two minutes a strong Whitland counterattack saw winger Lloyd claim his second try. Five minutes later another counterattack led to Glanville's second try, Davies' conversion taking the score to 57 - 3. Despite getting more territorial possession Rumney were still unable to finish off moves and went further behind when Whitland's right winger Andrew Richards intercepted an attempted clearance kick and raced in for a try. In injury time full back Morris finished off another threequarter movement with a touchdown under the posts, the conversion bringing a final score of 71 - 3.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A very disjointed performance from the squad. Every game prior to this we have competed with the opposition and been very unfortunate not to register more wins than we have. Today's game belonged to Whitland who proved to be a far better side than their table position would indicate. We will sit down and look at our team and individual performances, highlight where we went wrong and learn from this game. We will then move on to our next game at home against Bonymaen."
