Playing into a very strong wind Rumney took time to settle and after five minutes conceded a penalty which Llantrisant scrum half Jason Alford slotted over. The visitors were always prepared to run out of defence and soon took play into opposition territory where fullback Matthew Maclean levelled the scores with a penalty into the wind from the twenty two. Both sides looked to attack from all parts of the field and Llantrisant outside half Ian Worgan made a number of fast breaks which his supporting players could not keep up with, but in the twentieth minute outside half Ian Worgan kicked a long range penalty to put the Black Army 6 - 3 ahead. A lengthy period followed with the two teams using their backs and forwards in open play but shortly before half time Rumney props Rhodri Hanmer and Nathan Trevett combined well in a passing movement and from the resulting ruck scrum half Ben Morris blitzed the touchline with a scintillating break and fed an accurate, inside try scoring pass to centre Ian Blackburn. Llantrisant concentrated play around their powerful back row, particularly No8 Shaun Gilbertson and flanker David Owen, with Gilbertson unlucky not to score, but the visiting forwards were now settling well and locks Andrew Gardner and Michael Kelly, and No8 Carl Barker secured more and more possession and controlled the line outs, steering their side to a 6 - 8 lead at the break.
The second half started with more confident drives from Trevett, Barker and flanker Ryan Fenton, carried on by Gardner, and centre Paul Niblett and Maclean threateneing the Llantrisant line. Fifteen minutes into the half Llantrisant seemed to have repulsed the attacks and had taken play back to the half way line for a Rumney scrum. From quick possession Morris split the defence with a superb break and linked with Niblett who fed fellow wing Dan Clements. Clements still had a lot to do and a hard tackle sent him flying into the air where he completed a spectacular in flight cartwheel and still managed to touchdown for a fine try. Macleans's conversion took Rumney's lead to 6 - 15 and the full back soon added a try and conversion of his own after a crunching Niblett tackle created loose ball and Maclean kicked fifty five metres ahead, gathered and made a brilliant score. Llantrisant were now playing a tighter midfield game with winger Matthew Griffiths also looking dangerous, but Fenton and hooker Michael Feneck continued to create breaks and Clements and Maclean ran back the home side's attempts to clear. A series of penalties allowed Rumney to pin Llantrisant back in their twenty two and a crossfield sweep led to Kelly forcing his way over Rumney's fourth try. In the closing minutes the Black Army played their most controlled rugby, and neat interpassing and offloading between the forwards took play to the visitors line where captain Dean Evans spun over to score before Huw Rees concluded the proceedings with the final score reading Llantrisant 11 Rumney 27.
Gafyn Cooper, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Our first objective was to win and we did that. We had a few players missing so there was a reshuffle and those who came in played very well. Llantrisant is a very hard place to win at and the weather didn't suit our type of game but we did come away with that vital win and all in all I'm very happy. Ben Morris again played really well, as did Rhodri Hanmer and Michael Kelly. Rhodri Hanmer was the Man of the Match."
Carl Barker, No8 Rumney 1st XV : "It was a scrappy game at the start and we took a while to settle, there were a lot of nerves but captain Paul Niblett calmed us down as we got into the game. Michael Kelly played like a ginger Jonah Lomu, James Harris was inspirational when he came on and Danny Clark was very influential."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "We stuck it out with a lot of guts and although it wasn't pretty we scored some smashing tries and were worthy winners. Matthew Maclean was excellent and Ben Morris was sniping all the time. Michael Kelly is maturing so quickly it is unbelievable and the front five were superb."
