Scorers for Newport Saracens : R.Robertson try, D.Gregg conversion and five penalties
Newport Saracens played a tight controlled game from the start with No8 Madden being closely involved in most moves. Rumney were full of life with prop Charlie Gale gaining plenty of ground but behind the scrum there were numerous dropped passes and turnovers which frequently enabled the Saracens to regain possession and in the eighth minute they went ahead through a Darren Gregg penalty. Full back Jamie Roberts made a very good debut for Rumney with excellent line kicking and effective breaks into the line, one potential try-scoring break only being stopped by an illegal tackle. The visitors were awarded a number of penalties and launched a series of attacks but more poor passing and handling prevented them putting points on the board and after twenty seven minutes Gregg kicked a thirty five metre penalty to give his side a 6 - 0 lead, which they maintained until half time.
The second half started with Saracens working well in the lineout and their back row finding more gaps, and five minutes into the half Gregg added another penalty to increase the home side's lead to 9 - 0. Rumney were unable to penetrate the Saracens' defence and continued to lose possession through turnovers which enabled the Saracens to peg play back into the visitors' half. In the sixty-fifth minute Saracens gained clean ball from a lineout on the opposition five metre line and drove over for Robin Robertson to score the only try of the game. Gregg's excellent touchline conversion extended the lead to 16 - 0 and the increasingly confident home pack were soon back in Rumney territory, keeping the game tight and occasionally involving their backs. Former Rumney favourite Martin Cawley made a powerful break against his old side but the visitors' defence stopped most attacks and Ben Morris, Will Jones, Nathan Trevett and Ryan Sutton each brought off try saving tackles. Hooker Michael Feneck succeeded in finding gaps but as the game entered its final phase the Rumney forwards tended to be isolated when they did make breaks. In the closing minutes Gregg added two more penalties to give Newport Saracens their impressive 22 - 0 victory.
