After a three week lay off Rumney resumed their league programme with a devestating ten try spectacular characterised by sweeping movements involving skilful passing between backs and forwards. A shaky start found flanker Will Price and fullback Matthew Maclean settling the side with controlled play in the face of Hirwaun attacks but in the sixth minute visiting centre Richard Jones put his side ahead with a neatly taken drop goal. From the restart home centre Ian Blackburn did some great ripping work and scrum half Ben Morris set loose outside half Danny Clark. Clark then fed the ball back in to lock Andrew Gardner who worked neatly with props Nathan Trevett and Rhodri Hanmer to draw in the opposition and allow flanker Ryan Sutton and hooker Neal Ritchie to put wing Dan Clements under the sticks for the opening try.
Maclean slotted the conversion and within minutes Rumney
lock Michael Kelly was rampaging upfield to set up an attacking position from
which Morris, Clark and centre Paul Niblett put left wing
Henry Amadife streaking
away to score. From the restart Sutton took clean ball and linked with No 8
Chris Jones whose clever inside pass allowed Morris and Clark to launch another
long range attack, Clark's stunning thirty metre midfield break taking play
deep into the Hirwaun half where Maclean finished off the try with an unopposed
run in. Within five minutes Clark was on the scoresheet himself with a brilliant
solo effort from the half way line which saw him beat three defenders to cruise
in under the posts and five minutes later Price, who had an oustanding game
in the loose, smuggled the ball away to sprinter Amadife whose pace took him
well clear for another superb try and a 31 - 3 advantage. Jones had been showing
excellent control at the back of the scrum, particularly when the heavier Hirwaun
pack had caused problems, and he was rewarded with a try after he made a fine
break, combined with Sutton and received the return pass to touchdown for a
half time score of 38 - 3.
Hirwaun came out with all guns firing after the interval
and spent a lengthy period in the home twenty two where powerful centre Jones
and prop Phil Sedgemore found space and were only stopped by quality tackles
from Ritchie, Hanmer and Kelly. Ten minutes into the half Sutton, who had dominated
the lineout all afternoon, supplied Trevett with clean ball and the flying prop
drew the packs to the left before cleverly slipping a flick pass back to Kelly
who raced through the huge gap Trevett had created and scored a very good opportunistic
try. Hirwaun continued to attack, particulary through forward drives but conceded
possession with a loose kick which Maclean snapped up to launch a counterattack.
When the fullback was stopped Hanmer showed excellent skills to set up good
possession and Morris and Clark, whose high speed play had made a decisive difference
throughout the game, again set free the Rumney threequarters in a sweeping movement
which found Jones unexpectedly thundering down the left wing. The No 8's magnificent
inside pass put captain Niblett clear on a long range sprint for the line. Maclean's
successful conversion took the score to 50 - 3 but in the sixty fourth minute,
following more promising Hirwaun attacks, Jones and Niblett again combined to
break out of defence and put Sutton away for another long range try. In the
seventy fifth minute Rumney scrum half Gethin Tattersall started a threequarter
movement which gave Maclean plenty of room to use his pace to breeze in for
the final try and conversion and a stunning 62 - 3 w
in.
Gafyn Cooper, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Outstanding rugby, especially in the first half. Rumney played with continuity and pace and although we lost our way a bit when we were so far in front, I am very pleased with scoring fifteen tries in our last two games. Ben Morris and Danny Clark were excellent in setting up attacks and Matthew Maclean was outstanding and won the Man of the Match award."
Ian Blackburn, centre Rumney 1st XV : "After a very long break my match fitness was not the best but as a team we played some nice, open running rugby. Hirwaun tried to dominate us with their big pack but the conditions suited us a lot and our forwards and backs scored some neat tries. Chris Jones was immense with his breaks out of defence and Ryan Sutton had a stormer but everybody played well, especially the back row."
