The first half was full of exciting open play with both sides launching repeated attacks, Will Price, Andrew Gardner and Chris Jones leading the charge for Rumney and Richard Whiffin and George Dixon replying for UWIC. With both defences working overtime, it was thirty minutes before either team scored and then it was a rapid exchange of penalties by outside halves Gareth Williams-Davies for Rumney and Philip Dollman for UWIC which put the first points on the board. Within minutes Dollman was tackled without the ball and as Rumney full back Jamie Roberts and centre Paul Niblett both headed for the sin bin following the offence, the fly half slotted the resulting penalty to put his side into a 3 - 6 lead. Indiscipline led to an attacking Rumney scrum being turned into a UWIC penalty and the students took the opportunity to run from deep in their own half with Whiffin setting off on a devestating run to complete a brilliant long range try. Dollman's conversion put the College into a 3 - 13 lead which they maintained until half time despite a series of effective forward attacks by the Rumney pack.

A few minutes after the restart a well worked move saw UWIC stretch the home defence again and outstanding centre George Dixon burst through to score his first try. Dollman added another penalty to increase the students' lead to 3 - 21 but fifteen minutes into the half Rumney scrum half Ben Morris was impeded and second row Andrew Gardner took everyone by surprise with a quick tap, sidestep and unopposed try. UWIC came back when a rare fumble at the back of a Rumney lineout allowed the visitors to launch another threequarter movement which put Whiffin in at the corner for his second try. The students continued to get good possession and made effective use of Peter De Snyder at No8 but the Rumney forwards were now dominating and forcing penalties. Morris' consistent, controlled play had been an oustanding feature of the whole game and from a quick penalty his darting, ellusive run drew in the defence before his flick pass to Gardner sent the flying lock through for a fine try, shrugging off three tacklers on his way to the line. Williams-Davies added the points and five minutes later, with the Rumney forwards now firmly in control, a sustained drive was rounded off with Ryan Fenton grabbing the try which narrowed the gap to 20 - 26, with five minutes to go. UWIC's immediate reply came from Dixon who broke free from tacklers to claim a good corner try but the tension lasted until the final minute of injury time when Rumney centre Matthew Maclean finished off an excellent movement with another spectacular try bringing the scores to 25 - 31, and although Rumney bowed out of the cup, this was a particularly good performance which will strengthen the team's confidence for the second half of the season.

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "If Rumney had avoided getting yellow cards and kept fifteen men on the park for the whole game it might have been a different result, our indiscipline cost us the tie. It was a terrific game in difficult, windy conditions and it was a good performance from both sides. George Dixon the UWIC centre was excellent and for Rumney full back Jamie Roberts and scrum half Ben Morris were outstanding. Andrew Gardner had by far and away his best game for Rumney and was voted Man of the Match."
