Rumney concluded their 2004-2005 season with a heavy defeat at the hands of Tredegar in a game which was switched to the Nantyglo RFC ground. The 'home' side dominated the opening period through powerful forward bursts and quick attacks by the backs, and it was not surprising when No8 Stuart Jarman picked up from the base of a scrum and drove over for a try after only three minutes play. Rumney defended well to stop further attacks, winger Gareth Niblett pulling off a particularly important try-saving tackle, but clearance kicks failing to find touch and lost lineout ball proved costly and in the fifteenth minute Jarman scored his second try after his threequarters had stretched the vistors out wide. Tredegar's forward ball retention was a decisive factor throughout and with Rumney frequently conceding penalties in attempts to obtain the ball, outside half Gareth Kearney kicked Tredegar into a 13 - 0 lead after thirty minutes and added a conversion five minutes later when fullback Dan Morris burst through to score under the posts. Rumney fullback Paul Niblett replied with a brilliant break from his own twenty two, taking play close to the home goal line but centre Ian Blackburn was put out of the game with an illegal tackle which lead to a series of penalties and from a tap move Rumney centre Anthony Jones finished off a sweeping movement with a difficult touchdown. Kearney slotted another penalty on half time and the interval score read 21 - 5.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Kearney adding another penalty five minutes after the break, but determined work by Rumney prop Rhodri Hanmer, lock Michael Kelly and flanker Carl Barker relieved much of the pressure and another good passing movement ended with Jones sprinting in for his second try, followed by an excellent conversion from outside half Danny Clark. Within minutes Kearney had kicked another penalty but Rumney continued their revival through a Joey Offside try followed closely by Paul Niblett scoring the finest try of the game, and one of the best of the season, after a stunning movement which started in the Rumney twenty two. Niblett's try and Clark's conversions brought the score to a very close 27 - 24 but in the final ten minutes Tredegar consolidated their forces and hit back with a try by flanker Jack Dawson and a third by Jarman, Kearney's final conversion putting them out of sight at 44 - 24.
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "After a dreadful first half we turned around 21 - 5 down but got our act together and worked our way back into the game until it was 27 - 24, then decisions went against us and it knocked the heart out of Rumney. Ryan Sutton did very well and the Man of the Match was Paul Niblett."
