This was Rumney's first
league visit to Central Park and an exciting game in which the visitors scored
two tries to their opponents' one, ended in a narrow defeat as a result of a
high penalty count. The big Llantwit Fardre pack took control in the opening
minutes but Rumney kept them out and drove upfield where outside half Danny
Clark opened the scoring with a fifth minute penalty. Llantwit continued to
play to their forward strength and the pressure eventually told when the Rumney
defence was finally stretched and home fullback Ryan Morgan crossed in the corner.
The visitors came back strongly and their more mobile forwards started to find
space but in the twentieth minute Morgan added his first penalty when Rumney
killed the ball on the floor. The Llantwit pack were less composed as Rumney
props Nathan Trevett and Rhodri Hanmer gained plenty of ground in the middle
of the field, half backs Ben Morris and Danny Clark kicked well and fullback
Paddy O'Neill and winger Henry Amadife ran out of defence but Morgan added another
penalty, again awarded for killing the ball on the floor. In the thirty fifth
minute O'Neill once more broke out of defence on a long run and this time it
was Llantwit who killed the ball. From the quick penalty, centre Ian Blackburn
linked with Morris and captain Paul Niblett who sent out a long pass to winger
Dan Clements who beat his man and outpaced the defence for a quality try. The
Rumney backs continued to find space with wide attacks and although they now
matched the home side in the scrums, Llantwit still enjoyed good possession
in the line outs and worked a number of moves around powerful No8 Richard Andrews
and flanker Simon Bayliss. Just before half time a high tackle on Morgan gave
the fullback the chance to succeed with a thirty metre kick which took the interval
score to 14 - 8.
From the restart the Rumney pack found that they were able
to keep the opposition on the backfoot and Trevett was unlucky not
to score,
but more lost possession at the lineouts cost dearly in terms of converting
scoring opportunities into points and it was Morgan's reliable boot which put
his side further ahead with another penalty, this time awarded for entering
a ruck from the side. By now Rumney No8 Carl Barker was causing havoc in the
Llantwit defence and when he caught an attacker in possession on the half way
line he dragged the unfortunate victim ten metres where flanker Ryan Fenton
and lock Chris Jones ripped the ball to Trevett whose neat pass put away Clark
who dummied and deceived his way through four defenders to score a brilliant
unopposed try under the posts. The fly half's conversion of his own try brought
the score to 17 - 15 and Rumney looked set to score again as Blackburn, Amadife,
flanker Will Price and lock Michael Kelly all became increasingly prominent
in attack, but another lapse in the lineout allowed Llantwit to counterattack
and put fly half Michael Thomas into a postion from which he dropped an excellent
thirty metre goal. With ten minutes to go, Clark replied with an equally well
taken drop goal after a devestating break by Blackburn and Jones returned play
deep into Llantwit territory. The visiting forwards were now in control and
dominating the scrums but lapses in defence allowed the home side to strike
back and Morgan kicked his fifth penalty after yet another infringement. Although
Rumney were now constantly pressing with Trevett, Amadife, Blackburn and Gethin
Tattersall carving out huge gaps, there were still more lost lineouts and conceded
penalties which prevented any further scores in the time remaining before Mr
Bethel's whistle announced no side.
