After a shaky start in which Risca made most of the attacking opportunities, Rumney No8 Terry Gee did good work in securing a loose ball and setting up possession. Scrum half Ben Morris's characteristically rapid delivery to outside half Matthew Maclean created space and high scoring winger Dan Clements sprinted down the tramlines and under the sticks for the opening try. Risca hit back immediately when a clever miss move involving decoy runners put full back Gethyn Patterson in acres of space and he raced through for a well taken try and conversion. Twelve minutes into the match, with the home side now leading 7 - 5, wide awake Morris saw the opportunity for a quick tap penalty and linked with lock Andrew Gardner whose well timed pass to Ryan Fenton sent the powerful flanker driving through defenders to touchdown. Risca again struck back with a Patterson penalty which tied the scores at 10 - 10, but now the visiting forwards were gaining more control in open play through Gee, Gardner and lock Michael Kelly, and tenacious harrassing by prop Charlie Gale, flanker Will Price and hooker Michael Feneck was leading to Risca conceding penalties. After thirty five minutes the visitors back row caused disruption at a scrum from which Maclean scooped up the loose ball and his accurate pass to centre Anthony Jones on the burst, sent the threequarter thundering thirty metres to the line, handing off two tacklers on the way and scoring an excellent try. Maclean's conversion extended the lead but just before the interval the Risca centres drew in the Rumney defence and Byron Williams went through at a good angle for the try and conversion which gave a half time score of 17 - 17.

Five minutes after the break Rumney found themselves defending on their own line, but good recycling gave Morris the chance to run the ball and a flowing movement featuring full back Michael O'Neill, centre Ian Blackburn and Fenton took play to within ten metres of the Risca line and the outstanding try was finished off by Clements who had followed up well in support. Five minutes later and Fenton started a move with pacey prop Nathan Trevett who sent Clements away on a sixty metre burst for his hat trick. Maclean's conversion took Rumney into a 17 - 31 lead but the home side were now playing a more controlled game and following a clever switch move, Chad Bushell found another large gap in the opposition defence and broke through the centre for a well taken try, Patterson's conversion bringing the scores back to 24 - 31.

Entering the last quarter, Rumney's Jamie Brain took clean ball at the end of a line out and scrum half Gethin Tattersall let his backs loose. Maclean, Blackburn and centre Paul Niblett carried play forward before a neat pass from Trevett to Feneck gave the nimble hooker sufficient room to jink inside and score. Risca continued to exert pressure but the visitors regrouped each time and went on the offensive, one spectacular break by Kelly returning play more than fifty metres upfield. As the game drew to a close Rumney were again soaking up pressure in their own twenty two, when Gardner broke loose and sent out a booming pass to Trevett who kicked the ball deep into the opposition half. Maclean was flying up in pursuit and gathered the ball to outstrip the defence for a superb opportunist try and although Risca continued to attack there was no further scoring and the final whistle went with the scoreboard reading Risca 24 Rumney 41.

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "A very patchy performance and although we got those three points, it was not one of our better displays. Nathan Trevett and Ryan Fenton had good games, while in the backs Ian Blackburn was very solid and Dan Clements finished everything off very well. The Man of the Match was Michael Kelly."
