A very efficient start by Abercynon soon brought rewards when in the seventh minute a controlled forward drive near the Rumney line led to second row Meirion Withy breaking loose and scoring the opening try and three minutes later, after a good passing movement, hooker Kevin Cadogan crashed over to take the score to 0 - 10. In the twenty fifth minute another five metre scrum and drive gave visiting No8 Gareth Turner space to grab a third try before Rumney started to get themselves together and begin putting on some pressure. Backs Danny Clark, Anthony Jones, Matthew Miller, Joey Offside and Phil Carlton found space and with the action switching to and fro, Rumney stopped further Abercynon attacks with strong tackles by flankers Barry Phillips and Ryan Sutton and No8 Michael Kelly, and ended the half strongly but in arrears by 0 - 15.
The home side came out with guns blazing at the start of the second half but soon found themselves further behind when Abercynon centre Gareth Davies intercepted and went the length of the field for a try under the posts. Outside half Matthew Turner converted to take the score to 0 -22 but Rumney were still positive and becoming dominant at forward with prop Charlie Gale and flanker Ryan Fenton putting in hard work, when an excellent break by hooker Colin O'Donoghue set up scrum half Paul Nash who fed second row Jamie Braine to power over for their first try of the game in the sixtieth minute. Clark converted and from the restart Rumney attacked through centre Paul Niblett who regathered his own kick and linked with Jones to set up second row Emyr James to sprint in under the posts. Clark's conversion brought his side back to 14 - 22 but Abercynon added a further three points when Matthew Turner slotted a penalty and in the seventieth minute they increased their lead when a firm scrum and slick handling movement led to Leighton Wynder crossing. Trailing 14 - 30 Rumney continued to attack and a brilliant run by prop Paul Douglas took play deep into the visitors' twenty two. From a lineout and maul Ryan Sutton slipped the ball to Braine, and quick delivery to the backs found Jones too strong for the defence and his delayed flick to Clark put the outside half away on a blistering run under the sticks. Clark converted his own try but with only minutes left Rumney were unable to close the gap further and Abercynon left Riverside Park with a 21 - 30 win to their credit.
