Risca exerted the early pressure but from the start Rumney showed that they were ready for all out attack, and from a scrum near their own line hooker Michael Feneck started the movement that swept out to the left wing where Joey Offside combined with outside half Danny Clark to send Clark in for the opening try after five minutes. The home side was soon on the offensive again with centre Ian Blackburn touching down following spectacular, elusive running by winger Paddy O'Neill and it was not long before Clark added his second try after fierce attacking by fullback Matthew Maclean and Offside. Risca had been sustaining their forward pressure with the Rumney tries coming from breakouts and counterattacks, but in the twentieth minute the visitors sent the ball out wide where Ross Stark crossed in the corner for a very well constructed try, Gethin Patterson's excellent touchline conversion pegging the score back to 19 - 7. Another move from the base of the scrum saw Rumney No8 Chris Jones set off on a great drive upfield and from the second phase, scrum half Ben Morris switched left to Rhodri Hanmer on the burst and the pacey prop threw a mighty dummy before crossing for his side's fourth try. Their fifth touchdown came from another long distance break by Jones with lock Michael Kelly racing in to score and before the interval Maclean gathered a loose kick and devestated the defence before passing on to Offside to run in the try. In injury time at the end of the first half, centre Anthony Jones struck from long distance, sending flanker Carl Barker cruising in to score Rumney's seventh try and bring about an interval score of 45 - 7.
Barker was first on the scoreboard after the break when he followed up a clearance kick, gathered well and gallopped forty metres to touchdown and soon his backrow colleague Jones went in for a try after a skilfull buildup by Feneck, Kelly and Clark. Risca were still looking dangerous, particularly on breakouts and were unlucky not to finish off several forward movements with tries, but in the fifty third minute more interplay between the Rumney forwards and backs saw Hanmer again unstoppable on the burst and his accurate final pass sent Maclean away for a brilliant score. With heavy rain now falling, Offside maintained the momentum and conjured up an outstanding break leading to Barker's hat trick but the visitors were enjoying their best phase of the game and a strong forward drive was finished off with Wayne Taylor scoring a good try. In the closing minutes Rumney added two more touchdowns through fine breaks by centre Paul Niblett and Maclean. Clark had kicked six conversions in the course of the game and Maclean three, the grand total of eighty three points to twelve reflecting the outstanding attacking ability of Rumney in open rugby.
