Scorers for Rumney : H.Amadife try, G.Tattersall conversion, G.Tattersall penalty
Rumney returned to their spectacular, early season form with a brilliant win over highly regarded Treherbert in the most tense and exciting match seen at Riverside Park so far this season. Playing well from the start, they found themselves in Treherbert territory for much of the opening period, and with Ryan Sutton again dominant in the lineout, the backs were always ready to attack from deep. The visitors used pressure rugby to get into the Rumney half but good tackling prevented them from reaching the try line, hooker Michael Feneck showing particular skill in ripping the ball out of the tackle and counterattacking with it. Captain Paul Niblett and flanker Will Price started to find gaps and although Rumney were guilty of giving away a number of penalties, they did put together some impressive moves and took the lead in the twenty fifth minute when scrum half Gethin Tattersall kicked a penalty.
From the restart Rumney gathered well and set up possession to start a threequarter counterattack, but the ball went astray and Niblett let loose an enormous fifty metre fly kick which was reclaimed with a superb pick up by co-centre Ryan Westaway and from the second phase, Tattersall switched left to mobile prop Rhodri Hamner who supplied winger Henry Amadife with the try scoring pass. Tattersall's outstanding touchline conversion gave Rumney a 10 - 0 lead.
Outside half James Macdonald and Maclean were in fine form with their line kicking for Rumney and although Treherbert scrum half Dai Cambourne kept his pack going forward with clever chips, Macdonald was finding increasing length with his return kicks and restoring the advantage to his side. Rumney were proving to be full of pace and aggression with lock Chris Jones racing up the middle of the field and flanker Carl Barker probing gaps from the back of the scrum, but a loose ball allowed the Treherbert backs to attack down the right wing and outside half Gareth Roberts pounced to open his team's account and give a half time score of 10 - 5.
The second period opened with more swift attacks by the Rumney backs and forwards but Treherbert were also putting together neat threequarter movements. Price continued to find gaps and his supporting play helped the home forwards drive into opposition territory time and time again, while Barker maintained his clearing up work at the base of the scrum and kept making ground in the close exchanges. More clever play by Cambourne led to a good period for Treherbert and with Rumney conceding a series of penalties, the visitors surprisingly failed to add any further points to their score, but with Ben Morris now at scrum half and playing a very controlled game, the home side still maintained an edge. In the seventieth minute Roberts kicked a penalty to narrow the gap to only two points, but Morris and Macdonald's line kicking kept Rumney positionally safe and secure and despite strong attempts to break out of their own half, Treherbert were contained and the clock ran down, giving Rumney a very hard fought and valuable win.
Gafyn Cooper, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A gutsy and committed performance which saw us grind out a just deserved win. Our lighter pack really got amongst the Treherbert forwards and we carried the ball well in the backs. Rumney captain Paul Niblett was inspirational and the Man of the Match award was shared by Will Price and Carl Barker."
