Rumney offered plenty of resistance in the opening section of the game with Ryan Sutton taking his own and opposition ball, but after a four week layoff the visitors conceded too much turnover ball and gave away penalties. Ten minutes into the match Ystrad outside half Dylan Jones kicked his first penalty and this prompted his forwards to play a successful tight game which allowed them to gain plenty of ground before releasing the ball. Following a very good forward drive Jones started a sweeping movement which resulted in left wing Gareth Fear crossing in the corner and when Jones slotted the difficult conversion, Ystrad were ahead by 10 - 0.

Despite some poor passing which gave the opposition more possession, Rumney responded with what was to be their best period of the game, with good interplay between backs and forwards and incisive breaks by props Nathan Trevett and Rhodri Hanmer taking play close to the home try line. From the second phase snappy passing by the half backs saw full back Paddy O'Neill race through unopposed for a well constructed try.

Ystrad continued to find gaps in the Rumney defences with some long range breaks, and their forward control created a firm platform, but despite giving away more penalties, Rumney prevented the home side from scoring again before the interval. Ten minutes into the second half however, Ystrad set up a powerful driving maul and flanker Geraint Tucker spun over on the flank for a very well constructed try, which Jones successfully converted for a lead of 17 - 5.

Rumney launched exciting moves with centre Ian Blackburn, No8 Carl Barker and prop Charley Gale leading the charge, but these attacks were often stopped and turnover ball given away, and with the Ystrad pack pushing back their opponents in set pieces, the home side lodged in the visitors' twenty two for lengthy periods. In the seventieth minute a huge push from the Ystrad pack gave them a penalty and from the resulting scrum, a neat back row link put Jones in for a try, his own conversion kick bringing the score to 24 - 5, where it remained until the final whistle.

Dave Escott, Rumney RFC : "We never really turned up and the coaches must be tearing their hair out. We did a lot wrong and very little right and although we were good in the line out, the pack was slaughtered. The backs showed promise with Ian Blackburn in the centre taking the direct route and the second rows Andrew Gardner and Michael Kelly did well. Even allowing for a four week lay off, I was very disappointed with the performance."
