It was another promising start by Rumney with No8 Stuart Coles bursting through tackles, full back Lee Abdul running elusively and ouside half Danny Clark slotting a forty five metre penalty after five minutes. By the tenth minute however, Penallta were leading when a series of missed tackles allowed their speedy winger Shaun Robson to cross for the first try, followed by the conversion from outside half Gareth Davies. Missed tackles and the failure to kick the ball off the park when needed, were to prove very costly to Rumney throughout the match, and Penallta showed that they could absorb pressure and create turnovers despite the excellent possession being gained by second row Ryan Sutton in the initial line outs and the well organised tight forward drives by the visitors' pack. In the fifteenth minute it was Rumney second row Emyr James who claimed lineout ball ten metres from the home line and set up a series of tight drives before scrum half Paul Nash switched open to Clark who timed his pass perfectly to send winger Andrew Carlson through on the burst and under the posts for a fine try. Clark's conversion put the visitors back into the lead at 7 - 10 and for the subsequent period play tended to be concentrated mostly in the Penallta half with both packs evenly matched and the two sets of backs willing to spread the ball. The Penallta backs increased in confidence with successful breaks from deep but Rumney started to uncharacteristically drop passes and throw lineout balls over the back of the line where the opposition gratefully collected them. Rumney also failed to stop a snap, front of the lineout move which Penaltta used effectively on a number of occasions and with the home side incresasingly gaining territory, a penalty for obstruction allowed Davies to tie the scores at 10 - 10. Visiting flanker Neil Coles was proving to be the outstanding forward on display and with his brother Stuart he set up attacks and cut down opposition drives, but Rumney again allowed Penallta to catch them napping at the front of a lineout and a quick throw in led to the home side's second try and conversion, resulting in a half time lead of 17 - 10.

Scrappy play from both sides characterised the opening of the second half with more Rumney ball going astray at the back of the lineout, but when Sutton gathered clean possession in a line deep in Penallta territory, he started a series of tight, controlled forward movements that saw the ball spun out to flanker Ryan Fenton who came through superbly on the burst to take play to within five metres of the try line. Good second phase stretched the defence and mobile prop Nathan Trevett stormed over in the corner for Rumney's second, well constructed try, closing the gap to 17 - 15. Penallta were stung into stepping up their game and in the sixty second minute, taking advantage of more missed tackles, flanker Andy Powell cantered down the tramlines and touched down under the posts, Davies' conversion creating a 24 -15 lead. The home side continued to add pressure and concentrate play in the visitors' half, but despite more powerful breaks by Neil Coles and hooker Colin O'Donoghue taking their side into attacking positions, Rumney lost seventy metres after another long lineout ball went astray, allowing the opposition to return to the offensive. In the seventieth minute, following a blindside move, Penallta sealed the game through a neat corner try and with a final score of 29 -15, Rumney bowed out of the 2006-2007 Konica Minolta Cup.

Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "I spoke to the boys before we left for the game because there were question marks over peoples' attitudes as to whether they could sustain good rugby over several weeks. We are not as good as we thought we were and there was no flowing rugby in today's performance, we were trying to play off the back foot with balls going down out wide. We had a good build up and we fell short by a long way, but we must stay positive, the league is more important as everybody knows. To lose in this way today was more disappointing than anything, it is not the end of the world and we must pick ourselves up, the boys are down and I am glad that they take it to heart. Neil Coles was the Man of the Match"

Michael Peard, Forwards Coach Rumney 1st XV : "The first half was a massive wake up call after last week's performance. We were more disorganised than last week and Penallta were more competent at the set piece so we didn't have everything our own way today. There were a couple of occasions when we played in the right areas, when we turned slow possession into quick ball we scored tries and we defended well at certain times, but the good phases were few and far between. It's early and there is no doom and gloom but we can not accept that performance."

Stuart Coles, Captain and No8 Rumney 1st XV : "It was back down to earth after last week when we were so good, we were very poor today. You have to give credit to Penallta they were a well organised side and hungrier on the day. Hopefully this is a kick up the backside for some players and it is fortunate that it was not a league game. Neil Coles was outstanding today and saved tries with his defence."

Dave Gooding, Rumney RFC : "Rumney lost it because their lineout was poor and and they didn't win quick ball. They had the talent in the backs but there were problems when they had the ball, and all in all it was a fair result. The half backs played well, the second rows had good games and the back row battled hard and kept the score down."
