A remarkable second half fight back by Treherbert
ended in Rumney's second home league defeat of the season. It started so well
for the home side with powerful drives from hooker Neal Ritchie, centre Anthony
Jones, prop Craig Fitzpatrick and second row Michael Kelly, flanker Ryan Sutton
immediately in charge at the lineouts and outside half Danny Clark firing long
touchfinders deep into opposition territory. After only six minutes terrier-like
scrum half James O'Sullivan attacked a ruck and from it Kelly secured good ball
for Clark whose expertly timed pass reached full back Gareth Bowen on the burst.
Bowen shattered the defence and scored under the posts and with Clark adding
the extra points, Rumney seemed ready to increase their already impressive try
tally for the season, but within minutes they were rocked by Treherbert's first
attack, missed tackles allowing visiting outside half Gareth Roberts to race
out of defence and feed winger Paul Williams, whose speculative crosskick bounced
awkwardly, deceiving defenders and allowing scrum half Dean Cavin to simply
tap his hand on the ball for a shock try. With the sides now level at 7 - 7
Rumney prop Charley Gale and second row Anthony Wilson led aggressive forward
drives but second phase movements were marred by handling errors and turnovers,
and further missed tackles gave the visitors more opportunities to counterattack.
Sutton and Wilson were unbeatable in the lines and the loose, and dynamic No8
Stuart Coles again burst through many tacklers, setting up positions for O'Sullivan
and Clark to exploit. In the twentieth minute Treherbert seemed to have won
a turnover close to their line but as they broke out they fumbled the ball and
Rumney wing Dan Clements snapped it up and crossed in the c
orner to put Rumney back into the lead at 12 - 7.
Both sides were guilty of conceding unnecessary penalties and Clark and Roberts
added three points for each side, but with more pressure from Clark and Fitzpatrick,
and effective midfield breaks by Jones and centre Andrew Carlson, the home side
seemed in confident mood. Rumney appeared firmly in control as half time approached
and when Sutton took his customary possession in the line, good handling by
Jones and winger Joey Offside, with forward support from Coles, Fitzpatrick
and Gale, set up phased possession from which O'Sullivan linked with Sutton
who decisively burst through the opposition, feeding Clark with the try scoring
pass. In the minutes before the interval Treherbert showed increased attempts
to spread the ball but with a scoreline of 20 - 10 Rumney appeared to be heading
for a comfortable victory.
The second period started with more committed running from Treherbert but Rumney were full of spirit with hooker Michael Feneck and flanker Matthew Way in particular ready to take on all comers, but the home side's tendency to commit handling errors and concede turnovers was again about to haunt them. From a scrum in their own half the Treherbert forwards started a midfield handling movement from which Roberts launched a huge, speculative corner kick and in the subsequent confusion, winger Williams gathered and scored. More good gains by Coles and Kelly were frustrated by the Rumney support making errors, giving away penalties and turnovers and missing tackles, and in the fifty eighth minute The Devils again breathed fire when full back David Johns crossed without a hand being laid on him for his side's third try and the points which put them ahead at 20 - 22. Five minutes later missed tackles led to Roberts cracking the defence and putting Williams in for his second try, and in the seventieth minute accurate, close handling by the forwards resulted in a try for flanker Rhys Lewis. Trailing 20 - 34, Rumney showed no signs of giving in and the return to the 1st XV of back row Carl Barker inspired exciting attacking movements, Way and Offside being held just inches from the line and Bowen, Carlson and Jones also threatening to score. In the seventy ninth minute however, a final turnover saw visiting flanker Dean Phillips cantering in under the sticks after possession had been ripped from Rumney during a counterattack, and having achieved an astonishing second half tally of thirty one points without response, Treherbert took the spoils with Mr Davies' final whistle announcing the closing scoreline as Rumney 20 Treherbert 41.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We set a game plan to go out and enjoy ourseleves, there was no pressure but there was pride at stake. In the first half that is what we did but we tried to push too many passes and that's where we let ourselves down. When you are trying to offload in contact and push passes which are not there, the ball goes to the floor and you can't get any momentum but then we scored some nice tries and it seemed as if we had an easy run in. At half time I was really happy but we turned around and it was as if we were a different side, we were spilling the ball and I can't remember us ever missing first time tackles like we did today. There was no continuity in our game and we needed to go through the phases, we were still putting ball on the ground, but we will regroup for our East District Cup match on Wednesday, a four day turn around will be a good thing for us and we will put it right then against the Old Illtydians. One bad game does not make us a bad team, sometimes you have to take it on the chin and accept that you can play a lot better. The Man of the Match was Matthew Way, he is unique, he had a great game today, as he does every week."
Carl Barker, back row Rumney 1st XV : "The forwards and backs all played well in the first half but it was a very lacklustre performance. We were disrupted by injuries and the team seemed like a scratch side, we tried to force it too much and it was as if everyone felt the season was already over but I thought Anthony Wilson played very well today."
