After a long lay off due to inclement weather,
Rumney and Llantrisant finally met on the surprisingly firm and lush pastures
of Riverside Park for this eagerly anticipated rearranged fixture and it was
all action from the kick off. An instant penalty gave Rumney outside half James
Thomas the chance to put in a long range touch finder and set up a lineout on
the Llantrisant twenty two, from which No8 Anthony Wilson took clean ball to
set up a driving maul and, skilfully guided by second row Michael Kelly, the
home forwards powered their way to the tryline where Mr Harrhy dec
ided that the maul had been halted illegally and
he went under the posts for a penalty try. Thomas's conversion put the home
side into a 7 - 0 lead in less than two minutes. Neither side had played for
a number of weeks and not surprisingly the opening period was littered with
errors, free kicks and penalties, but both sets of forwards tested each other
out and Llantrisant scrum half Glen Holloway and his Rumney counterpart Chris
Milton started a duel with sniping runs and snap passes, and Rumney backs Tom
Daley and Lewis Fox looked particularly dangerous when in possession.Home flanker
Ryan Sutton dominated the lineouts with Wilson and flanker Matthew Way bursting
from the backrow and hooker Michael Feneck blazing upfield, while in defence
Kelly stole lineout ball and centre Luke Ford pulled off excellent blocking
tackles in midfield to stop dangerous Llantrisant attacks. In the twenty fifth
minute, following counterattacks from either side, Rumney second row Paul Bull
collected a loose clearance kick on the half way line and fed Ford on the outside,
the centre sprinted down the tramways before delivering the scoring pass for
supporting full back Andrew Carlson. Five minutes later Bull was on the rampage
again, accompanied by Way and Kelly, breaking out of defence and taking play
to the Llantrisant try line, where props John Leadbeatter and Matt Russell dominated
the set piece with fierce scrummaging before Milton's probing led to Feneck
diving over for a try. Yet another Bull sortie upfield resulted in good second
phase and neat interpassing by Thomas, Ford, and winger Lewis Fox led to Kelly
snapping up a bouncing ball and crossing for a fine opportunist try, Thomas's
conversion stretching the lead to 26 - 0 after thirty five minutes. As the interval
approached, flying wing Lincoln Plummer seized on a fumble and sprinted fifty
metres for another Rumney try and a remarkable half time score of 33 - 0.
The second half started with Thomas making brilliant breaks and the Rumney pack, spearheaded by Russell and Leadbeatter, keeping tight control but Llantrisant had clearly reorganised and were now winning lineout possession and taking the game to the homeside with powerful contributions from second rows Huw David and Sam Williams, and flanker Gavin Groves becoming increasingly difficult to contain. Ten minutes into the half the visitors had an attacking scrum from which No8 Dai Owen fed Holloway who created an excellent blindside break and put winger Craig Allen in at the corner. The home side brought on prop Craig Fitzpatrick, second row Adam Brake and strong running centre Gareth Bowen and launched a series of attacks, Wilson controlling events from the back row, and Fitzpatrick, Leadbeatter and Brake driving forward and linking with their backs, but the visitors' defence was now very solid and soaked up the pressure, until the seventieth minute when Wilson claimed clean lineout ball and set up another close range driving maul which hooker Neal Ritchie finished off with a touchdown. The Black Army again came back fiercely and produced some of their best forward drives of the day, while Rumney brought on scrum half Ben Morris and tightened up their approach, but in the eightieth minute conceded a penalty which Holloway took quickly, his long booming pass finding prop Dean Evans who obliged with a good try. Allen's conversion brought the proceedings to an end with the scoreboard reading Rumney 38 Llantrisant 12.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We knew from last year's experiences that Llantrisant's game plan would always be to keep it tight, we knew exactly what they would do and that they wouldn't spread it wide. We started well and our plan was to put it wide, I knew if we did that we'd have half a chance. We actually scored with a twenty five metre drive in the first minute and that really set the tone for the afternoon, it gave us a load of confidence. For thirty minutes we outplayed Llantrisant, all the things we tried came off, we like to play good phase rugby and we have got a lot of footballers in our side, but we still gave away nine penalties in the first half when we really needed to keep possession. At half time I spoke about being positive and keeping up the momentum but in the second half things died down a bit and there was a lot of stop and start rugby. All the hard work had been done and the points were on the board, I was very pleased with the performance, we hadn't played for a few weeks and had had limited time on the training field, but this young side is very capable of ending up in the top four in this league. There was talk at the start of the season about survival but that was never going to be the case. Chris Milton had a really good game, making important breaks, and the Man of the Match was Anthony Wilson who played at No8 for the first time this season and was magnificent, he covered every blade of grass on the pitch."
Neal Ritchie, hooker Rumney 1st XV : "The boys played very well especially in the first half, the front row all had excellent games and Anthony Wilson was outstanding. I'd like to think that my try came from a break I made from the half way, but the truth must be told and we set up a driving maul from a line out and John Leadbeatter fed the ball back for me to dive over !"
