Rumney's early efforts were hampered by uncharacteristic handling errors and although they adopted an eager attacking approach, they were contained by the UWIC defence and gave away penalties. In the eighth minute a clean lineout gave home outside half Simon Humberstone the opportunity to dart through and supply a try-scoring pass to powerful centre Sean Hawkey. Humberstone added the conversion and punished the visitors with mighty touchfinders but Rumney No 10 Joey Deacon was equally capable and kept his side mostly in the UWIC half of the field. Emyr James supplied Rumney with good lineout ball but the UWIC defence remained firm until a high tackle allowed Deacon to kick a fine long range penalty to bring the score to 7 - 3. In the seventeenth minute outstanding UWIC wing Rhys Crane gathered a Rumney clearance in his own half and set off on a devestating solo run which took him more than fifty metres through desperate tacklers to score an excellent try, Humberstone again slotting the conversion. Rumney still had the edge at forward, Anthony Wilson also gaining good set piece ball, James Harris and Michael Kelly driving upfield and Matthew Way harrassing and charging down clearances, but indiscipline again frequently gave the ball to the opposition who systematically kicked it back into Rumney territory. Both sides used their threequarters effectively, Rumney full back Tom Daly proving elusive on the counterattack, wingers Lincoln Plummer and Andrew Carlson looking for work and centres Paul Niblett and Paul Collett forceful in midfield, but both defences were also sound and half time arrived with the score 14 - 3 in the College's favour.
Three minutes after the interval UWIC again pounced on a Rumney handling error and Hawkey put Crane in for his second try, Humberstone's touchline conversion stretching the lead to 21 - 3, but the visitors struck back rapidly with scrum half Chris Miller taking a quick penalty and then guiding the forwards until tight work by hooker Michael Feneck, prop Matt Russell, No8 Adam Brake and Wilson provided the platform for Kelly to score from the careful build up. UWIC No8 Luke Foot cleaned up well in the loose and worked effectively with lively scrum half Morgan Thompson, added to which Rumney received yellow cards and committed errors in attacking positions and in the sixty eighth minute Humberstone added a penalty. Rumney continued to exert forward pressure through the introduction of fresh talent, Ryan Sutton, Paul Bull, Neal Ritchie and John Leadbeatter in the pack and livewire scrum half Chris Milton, but were unable to prevent a further UWIC try when a carefully controlled drive was finished off by flanker Mike Barber in the seventy third minute. Battling to the end Rumney attacked through a Sutton breakaway but the home defence remained intact and the College ran out winners at 31 - 8.
