Rumney gained another impressive away victory in tricky conditions at Abercynon Park. Torrential rain from the kick off failed to dampen the action and the visitors scored six tries and the home side two. Abercynon opened the scoring in the third minute with a try from Chris Wilkins converted by Gavin Cooper. Three minutes later Phil Ford put through a delicate chip kick into the home in goal area and raced through to ground the ball for a fine individual try for Rumney which was converted by Simon Davies. In the eighth minute Rumney hooker Dean Simonds broke through for his side's second try and this was followed by a Simon Davies penalty. Davies was on top form and so was Rumney second row Mark Bowcott who was proving unstopable in loose play and who scored tries in the twenty ninth and thirty eighth minutes. Abercynon replied in the sixty fifth minute with a try by Neil Edwards but by this time Rumney's dominance was clear and Simon Greedy crossed for a try in the seventy third minute and made a superb break which led to Glyn Welch's try for Rumney a few seconds before the end of the game.
Glen George, Captain Rumney RFC : "We made some mistakes but also played plenty of good rugby. When we were in front we did things which we shouldn't have done. I was not happy with the scrummage but on the other hand Michael Peard was outstanding at second row. We have three hard games coming up - if we get through them we are definitely a good side !".
