In the first half Rumney looked the more dangerous side and scored two excellent tries after flowing movements between backs and forwards - Christian Wills scored the first following an outstanding break by Simon Greedy and Mike Peard crashed over for the second. Merthyr's first half try came from centre Nigel Berbillion and this was later followed by their second try when captain Mark Lewis finished off a fine move. Merthyr outside half Stuart Hancox dummied his way through the Rumney defence to touch down and also kicked two penalties to give his side a 29 - 15 lead. In injury time Simon Davies slipped a pass to prop Matthew Davey who scored under the posts for Rumney. Simon Davies converted.
Con Ritchie, Rumney RFC : "We should have won the game in the first half, we seemed to be out of sight but in the second half we lost it. Rumney must learn to take chances - we made lots of them but didn't take them".
