Rumney
lost the game at Pontypool Park but never surrendered and with
Glenn George and Ben Atkins in outstanding form, made Pooler battle
to the end for their victory. In the first half wing Lennie Woodard
scored two tries for Pontypool, his first scores for the club
since returning on dual registration from Pontypridd. A Stuart
Lawrence penalty and conversion against a penalty by Rumney outside
half Simon Davies gave the home side a 15-3 lead at the interval.
Davies soon kicked another penalty but Pontypool replacement Scott
Mitchell replied with a penalty. Rumney worked hard with hooker
Dean Simons prominent and No.8 Ben Atkins making excellent breaks
from the back of the scrum but the Pontypool defence held firm
to give them an important and hard fought win in their push for
promotion to the Premiership.
Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "It's a game we could have won. I thought Ben Atkins was outstanding, the Man of the Match".
