Below : Mallett Cup Final 17.05.2000

Rumney Athletic 5   Caerau 19

Scorer for Rumney: L.McQueline

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "We always knew that Caerau would want to play a very forward orientated game. Our game plan was to move them about the park as often as we could and put as much width on the ball as possible, but to do this you have to win enough ball. In fairness to Caerau they stopped us playing, we found it very difficult to release any quick second phase possession. I was very disappointed that tactically a few players let themselves down but we must not lose sight of the fact that it is a very young team that can, with time and maturity, become a very good side."

ABERCYNON 2nd XV  V  RUMNEY ATHLETIC
Y Parc, Abercynon
Saturday 29th April 2000 K.O. 2.30pm

Abercynon 2nd XV 39  Rumney Athletic 22

Scorers for Rumney : L.Maquiline try, M.Carey try, M.Maunder try and 2 conversions and drop goal

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "We hung in and played some good stuff but first team calls on our front row and a number of injuries meant that we fielded a depleted side. It was very hard and both sides played good rugby - we are looking forward to home and away fixtures with Abercynon next season".

DUNVANT 2nd XV  V  RUMNEY ATHLETIC

Dunvant RFC, Swansea
Saturday 15th April 2000. K.O. 2.30 pm

Dunvant 2nd XV 26   Rumney Athletic 14

Scorers for Rumney: A.Woodward try, M.Perks try, M.Maunders 2 conversions

Peter Coles, Coach Rumney RFC: "We started off well but over all it was a lacklustre performance. Unless we play well against sides like Dunvant we are never going to compete at higher levels. We had tired legs in the second half, probably due to the Llanrumney cup game a few days earlier - in fact there was no score in the second half today."

MALLETT CUP SEMI FINAL

RUMNEY ATHLETIC  V  LLANRUMNEY

Canton RFC, Cardiff
Wednesday 12th April 2000. K.O. 5.45 pm

Rumney Athletic 21   Llanrumney 13

Scorers for Rumney : Anthony Jones try, Anthony Moore try, Adam Harding 3 penalties and 1 conversion

Peter Coles, Coach Rumney RFC : "This was a well disciplined display and showed that Rumney Athletic had no worries about taking on the Llanrumney 1st XV. Our back row is a strong unit and they imposed themselves on the game and forced Llanrumney into the errors from we scored".

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Brilliant, the Athletic's best victory of the season against what many people were saying was the strongest side in the District !"

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "A famous victory - played in dreadful conditions and against all the odds !"

Llanharan 2nd XV 34     Rumney Athletic 21

Scorers for Rumney : Liam Maquiline 2 tries, Wayne Murphy try, Matthew Maunders 3 conversions

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "We did not perform as well as we have done this season but cup rugby is about
taking your chances and turning pressure into points. We failed to do this and paid the penalty for it. I think we have to put this game behind us and prepare for our next cup semi-final. Man of the Match, Wayne Murphy".

Rumney Athletic 46     Howardians 12

Scorers for Rumney : L.McQueline try and conversion, M.Kearle try and conversion, L.Miller try, M.Carey 2 tries, W.Feneck try, J.Walsh try, J.Greedy try, L.Brincat conversion

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "The game plan was to spread the ball about the park. We achieved this on a number of occasions, hence the final score of 46 points to 12. We did not play to our full potential for the full 80 minutes, which the team will come to realise is what is required of them. To be fair to Howardians they never gave up the fight but we were always in control".

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "Rumney were superb in patches. There was no real consistency in the second half, there were so many stoppages we couldn't play as we wanted to. Michael Carey played particularly well after a long absence, the longer the game went on the better he got. Perhaps we should have kept it wide where we had all the pace !".

RUMNEY ATHLETIC
 V  MOUNTAIN ASH 2nd XV

Riverside Park, Rumney
Saturday 26th February 2000. K.O. 3.00 pm

Wayne Murphy scores Rumney Athletic's first try
at Mountain Ash 15.01.00

Rumney Athletic 27   Mountain Ash 2nd XV 19

Scorers for Rumney : J.Greedy try, R.Randell try, M.Kearle try, A.Moore try, S.John try, L.Brincat 1 conversion

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "A very dogged performance against a good Mountain Ash side - it took a long time to wear them down. Rob Randell played superbly, he was the Man of the Match. We hope to have an Athletic XV game at Riverside Park next Friday evening".

Peter Coles, Coach Rumney RFC : "If the threequarters had played as well as the forwards did it would have been a bigger score. It shows a lot of commitment when Rob Randell turns down the chance of a month's holiday in Florida to play for Rumney instead !"

RUMNEY DEV. SQUAD  V  LONDON WELSH DEV. SQUAD

Riverside Park, Rumney
Friday 18th February 2000. K.O. 7.15 pm

Rumney Dev. Squad 29    London Welsh Dev. Squad 0

Scorers for Rumney : Robert Walsh 3 tries, Simon Grainger try, Matthew Kearle try and 2 conversions

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "A well worked exercise in very muddy conditions with both sides trying to play good rugby. This type of game is excellent for our young players, the more fixtures like this we can play the better. The whole Rumney pack were outstanding and Robert Walsh on the wing and Simon Grainger in the centre put in brilliant performances".

LLANHARAN 2nd XV  V  RUMNEY ATHLETIC

The Dairy Field, Llanharan
Saturday 29th January 2000. K.O. 2.00 pm

Llanharan 2nd XV 22   Rumney Athletic 24

Scorers for Rumney : M.Kearle try, A.Moore try, L.McQuiline try, R.Randall try, M.Maunders 2 conversions

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "A very gutsy performance. Rumney were leading 5 - 12 at the break but Llanharan had a number of former first team players and they got stuck in in the second half. Our young Rumney side showed a lot of character in this game. Man of the Match - Anthony Moore".

Rumney Squad : A.Harding  M.Foley  R.Davies  S.John  D.Carlson  M.Maunders  L.Miller  A.Jones  L.McQuiline M.Kearle G.Power  N.Ritchie  J.Harris  T.Kilburn  W.Feneck  A.McCormack  A.Moore  W.Murphy  J.Walsh  J.Greedy B.Chambers

Rumney Athletic 29    Dunvant 2nd XV 7

Scorers for Rumney : Wayne O'Connor try, Robert Walsh 2 tries, Rhys Davies try, Matthew Maunders 3 conversions and 1 penalty

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "Dunvant were a very good team and they scored an excellent try. After that we tightened the ship and played the style of rugby that we need to play all the time. The forwards performed very well and at present we are going from strength to strength. Man of the Match : Wayne Feneck.

Peter Coles, Coach Rumney RFC : "Dunvant started off extremely well with a very good try by one of their full time professional players. That shook Rumney into action and we replied with four tries. It was a good exhibition and a very high standard of rugby. We are looking forward to playing a return fixture in Swansea as soon as possible".

Andy McCormack, Rumney RFC : "We had too much pace for them and Tonmawr wasn't a bad side. Our youngsters had the edge and Lee Miller had an outstanding game".

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "A very entertaining game played in atrocious conditions of rain and snow. Cwmbran were a very good side. For Rumney, Stewart Granger from the Youth Team played very well as did Wayne Murphy and the whole of the back row. Man of the match - Wayne O'Connor".

Scorers for Rumney : Matthew Kearle 3 tries, Lee Rossiter 4 tries, Matthew Maunder try and 6 conversions, Anthony Jones 2 tries, Andy McCormack try.

Sean Lee, Rumney RFC : "Rhiwbina had a big, heavy pack but our game plan was to move them around the park and that way our threequarters scored a lot of tries".

Peter Coles, Rumney RFC : "It took us twenty minutes to get started but a few old heads, including evergreen Martin Perks, put some stability into what is still a very young side. Scotsman Gus Hamilton and South African loose head Jeff Probert (no relation to Ollie LeRoux) had outstanding games".

Saturday 20th November 1999. K.O. 3.00 pm

St Albans 29  Rumney Athletic 21

MALLETT CUP

RUMNEY ATHLETIC V GLAM. WANDERERS 2nd XV

Riverside Park, Rumney
Saturday 13th November 1999.
K.O. 2.30 pm

Rumney Athletic 31   Glam. Wanderers 2nd XV 11

Scorers for Rumney : Robert Walsh try, Matthew Kearle try, Dougie Law try, Stuart Coles try, Lee Brincat 3 pens and 1 conversion.

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "Glamorgan Wanderers were a very mature side and they tried to slow the game down. We like an open expansive game and eventually we were able to break down their defence and score some good tries. Man of the match - Wayne Murphy, he had a smashing game. Clive Spenk, an oustanding prop from South Africa has come to our area and is joining Rumney so we are looking forward to some big performances from Clive soon".

Peter Coles, Coach Rumney RFC : "We played well in patches and scored when it mattered but the scorline flattered Rumney. Stuart Coles proved his fitness and is ready to return to the 1st XV and Wayne Murphy was two yards quicker than anyone else".

RUMNEY ATHLETIC  V  UWIC 2nd XV

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "The conditions were dreadful so the match was riddled with mistakes but it made an entertaining game. UWIC went 14 points up and although we were not playing really well Rumney just about sneaked home".

RUMNEY ATHLETIC SQUAD  V  FAIRWATER

Riverside Park, Rumney
Tuesday 26th October 1999
K.O. 7.00 pm

Rumney Athletic 8    Fairwater 6

Scorers for Rumney : Daniel Fofana try, Lee Brincat penalty.

Sean Lee, Coach Rumney RFC : "It was good for the boys to play in this development game. There were some First Team players included who haven't been playing regularly lately along with a number of Youth players. It is good for young players to be exposed to strong sides like Fairwater. There were some good phases and also quite a few wrong options - the result was a fair reflection of the game".

Jim OBrien, Rumney RFC Committee : "Both sides were a bit rusty after the enforced break and Rumney delivered a much improved performance. When the side settles down it will be a very good one. David Price refereed the game well".

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "I was disappointed with the standard of rugby. Rumney mixed and matched and brought in First Team squad members Daniel Fofana, Chris Miles, Grant Harrington, Stuart Coles and Matthew Davey but the team took quite a while to settle in".
