Rumney eased away from the bottom two teams in the First Division by defeating Abercynon in this try filled but contoversial encounter at Riverside Park. Robbie Savage opened the scoring for the visitors with two penalties but then Rumney's first try came from Captain Glenn George when he powered over the line after a strong forward drive. Christian Wills and Ben Atkins added further tries for the home side to establish what looked like a commanding lead at half time. Following the interval Christian Wills scored one of the tries of the season with a stunning solo effort and shortly afterwards Lee Abdul finished off another brilliant three quarter movement with a try in the corner. Abercynon replied with a try by full back Craig Williams and were also awarded two controversial penalty tries, both of which were converted by Robbie Savage but though the visitors pounded the home side's line for long periods at the end of the second half, Rumney kept them out and ran down the clock to secure a vital victory.

Steve Brincat, Rumney RFC : "We started off well and Rumney showed a lot of guts in the first half, but we allowed Abercynon to come back into the game and it was a close thing in the end. Mike Peard and Gareth Downes had oustanding games but my man of the match has to be centre Nick Stork who had one of his best games for us. It goes to show that you can't play rugby unless your front five is solid but whichever way you look at it, a win is a win".
