A fine individual try two minutes from the end of normal time by prop Craig Walton secured this important victory for Rumney. The home side took a sixth minute lead through outstanding loosehead Paul Douglas who followed up Gareth Downes' quickly taken tap penalty to cross for an excellent try. Powerful lock Steve Barber increased Rumney's lead, driving over the try line after a concerted surge from the pack. Abertillery opened their account with a well taken try by No.8 Geraint Gladwyn. Outside halves Simon Davies and Craig Mapp each landed two penalties and Abertillery brought themselves within two points of Rumney through a close range try by flanker Gareth Howells but Walton's elusive blind side break in the closing minutes sealed victory for the home side.
