Rumney stormed to a very impressive WRU Challenge Cup victory over Newbridge at Riverside Park. The match was played after three postponments and the outcome was always going to be decided by who adjusted better to the heavy conditions. With the wind behind him in the first half, Rumney outside half Simon Davies's touch finding was faultless. Glenn George had one of his finest games for Rumney and led the pack superbly, resulting in the forwards having the advantage in all aspects of play and Ben Atkins at No.8 gaining great yardage from the back of the scrum. A brilliant display from Christian Wills, returning to the Rumney full back position after injury, led to the first try when he counterattacked at speed and beat three tacklers before putting in flanker Simon Greedy near the Newbridge posts. Rumney quickly added to this lead when a barnstorming break by centre Max Ryce set up Simon Davies for a try under the posts. Newbridge fought back well but the Rumney defence held firm to secure victory and a home tie against Cardiff in the next round, which will be played at Riverside Park on Saturday January 22nd 2000.

Steve Brincat, Rumney RFC : "The game was won in the first half. In a way Newbridge did us a favour by running the ball in the first five minutes, even from under their posts - that's a risky thing to do in cup rugby and Rumney defended very well. Glenn George was outstanding and gave the opposition nightmares. The front row put in a massive performance with Paul Douglas everywhere on the park. The experience of Phil Ford showed through too, in fact you can't fault anyone in the Rumney side !"

Phil Ford, right wing Rumney RFC : "A great win. It was a hard game and it took a lot of guts to get the victory. The forwards played superbly, doing everything well and that made it good for the backs. I'm happy and it will be interesting when we meet Cardiff here in a couple of weeks time !"

Gareth Downes, scrum half Rumney RFC : "We made hard work of it in the first half and then sat on our lead a bit. The forwards played exceptionally well. A win is a win and you can't knock it !"

Stuart Carlson, Rumney RFC : "A superb first half and an outstanding 25 minutes when Rumney ran Newbridge ragged and scored two excellent tries. Come on down Cardiff, there's a welcome waiting for you at Riverside Park !"

Lee Abdul, left wing Rumney RFC : "We stayed in form all the way through the game. It was never going to be a game for players out wide but they all count and with Cardiff at home in the next round, we've got something to prove !"
