Rumney appear to have kept some of their best attacking play for the latter part of the season. Following Saturday's convincing victory over Abercynon they continued with this outstanding performance against already relegated UWIC, outscoring the students by nine tries to four.

It was certainly one of Rumney's best displays of the season. From the first blast of Derek Bevan's whistle they took the game to the students. Phil Ford played an important role in organising the Rumney defence while at the same time making frequent attacks on the students' back division.

The opening quarter saw four tries from the home side with Lee Abdul adding two more before half time. Gareth Downes crossed from close range and lock Mike Peard went over for two excellent tries. Peard's powerful running with the ball has proved to be one of Rumney's greatest assets this season. His ability in the line out has seen him become the most impressive jumper in the First Division and he shattered the UWIC defence with a sixty metre touchline sprint which set up one of the best tries of the evening.

There was a welcome return to the Rumney team for assistant coach Steve Ford. A serious back injury had forced him into a long lay off but the Welsh international marked his return to Rumney's starting lineup with a brilliant try.

Paul Douglas, Rumney RFC : "It was great, I enjoyed it. The forwards took it to them and counteracted their back play. Rumney played the right type of game and let the ball out at the right time. The backs finished things off really well".
