Tondu completed the double over Rumney this season in an exciting game played in torrential rain at Pandy Park, Tondu. Austin Howells, the Tondu full back, opened the scoring with a penalty in the fifteenth minute and he touched down for a try under the posts ten minutes later. Rumney replied with a strong drive from a tapped penalty which saw No.8 Simon Greedy attack the try line and from the second phase possession lock Mark Bowcott scored the touchdown. The half time score was Tondu 13 Rumney 5.
After the interval another Howells penalty took the home side further ahead at 16 - 5 but neat interplay between the Rumney backs, particularly by centre Nick Stork, put outside half Simon Davies in under the posts for a well taken try. As the conditions deteriorated further the Waterwheelers took an iron grip on the game and produced tries from oustanding No.8 Nathan Strong, Karl Hocking and Alun Brown.
Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "The boys put up a good show and we were in the game until the last twenty minutes. With the score at 16 - 12 we should have kicked an easy penalty and who knows what would have happened then. All the youngsters we brought in played very well and I was particularly impressed by Grant Harrington and Wayne O'Connor. Overall I was happy with the performance".
