Scorer for Rumney Youth : Michael Thomas try and conversion and 3 penalties
Rumney Youth rounded of an impressive season by collecting the Cardiff & District Rugby Union Millennium Cup. Fly half Michael Thomas scored all sixteen points as he converted his own try and landed three penalties. This victory came a week after Rumney had collected the East District Youth Cup with a win over Llanharan in the final and all but five of the current squad will be eligible for youth rugby next season. No.8 and skipper Neil Coles led his side superbly.
Dave Hale, Rumney RFC : "The Illtydians played cup rugby, a lot of kick and rush. They had done their homework and wanted to contain Michael Thomas but in a planned move he kicked ahead and won the race to get to the touchdown for the only try in the match. Michael Kelly had one of his best games for Rumney Youth and was the Man of the Match."
Dai Thomas, Coach Rumney Youth : "It was a scrappy game which didn't compare with the East District Final and was overshadowed by the big Illtydians pack. On the credit side, our defence made the difference and outside half Michael Thomas scored all sixteen points including one penalty from 48 metres."
Neil Coles, Captain Rumney Youth : " We played below par but our defence was excellent. We didn't play our usual game but when we went forward we looked more dangerous than they did. The pack didn't perform as well as we normally do but when the Illtydians attacked they never looked dangerous because our defence was so good.Michael Thomas kicked all the points and scored the try."
Michael Thomas, Rumney RFC : "A very hard game. Their big forwards dominated us but good defence got us through and our superior fitness showed in the end."

Coles and Grainger led from the front and had outstanding games and so did hooker Michael Feneck who took a number of strikes against the head. Graham Burke dominated the lineout and worked hard all around the park. Man of the Match - Graham Burke".

Scorers for Rumney : Michael Kelly 2 tries, Michael Thomas try and 1 penalty and 2 conversions
Neil Coles, Captain Rumney Youth : "A tight game in which Treorchy started well with all guns blazing but the tide turned and in the second half our forwards took control and won the game. A good team effort ".
John Mathias, Rumney RFC : "An excellent game where Rumney's brilliant ball handling skills, tackling and support all came right with forwards and backs playing for each other. Treorchy were a very good side with an excellent goal-kicking full back".
Danny Lee, Rumney RFC : "The Rumney team all played well. The Thomas brothers played exceptionally but it's hard to pick out any individuals and you could give out fifteen man of the match trophies !"
Scorers for Rumney : Neil Coles try, Michael Kelly try, Michael Thomas conversion
Dave Hale, Chairman Rumney Youth : "A very good display. To sum it up, it was a good team performance against a strong, older side. Rumney included a lot of youngsters and they played very well to defeat a team of greater physical size. Michael Thomas had an excellent game and so did Neil Coles".
Gareth Thomas, Rumney Youth : "Our forwards were at ones and twos and not really together at first but the backs were brilliant. In the end the best team won. (I played superbly !)".
Scorers for Rumney : Nathan Paul 2 tries, Neil Coles 2 tries, Simon Grainger try, Michael Feneck try, Michael Kelly 2 tries, Craig Hill try, Matthew Miller 2 tries, Graham Burke try, Michael Thomas 6 conversions

Scorers for Rumney : P.Niblett try, S.Granger try, M.Thomas 3 penalties and 1 conversion
Martin Willis, Rumney RFC : "An excellent performance, especially without Rumney's captain Neil Coles. Graham Burke took a lot of lineout ball and his fellow second row Rhys Williams put in a brilliant effort too. Young No.8 Carl Barker showed maturity beyond his years and had an outstanding game. Nathan Paul, Michael Feneck and Dai Evans scrummaged superbly against a strong Cwmbran front five and the half-backs Gareth and Michael Thomas, Paul Niblett and winger Matthew Payne all showed very safe hands. Man of the Match - Carl Barker".
Michael Thomas, Rumney Youth : "There was a big improvement by the forwards over last week's game and they competed very well. Carl Barker at No.8 had an excellent game and showed what an exceptional player he is. The backs defended very well. (My 40 yard penalty was superb !)".

Scorers for Rumney: Michael

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "Playing against an outstanding Penarth side who had only lost two out of twenty-two games, Rumney performed admirably. Gareth Thomas was a tower of strength and Graham Burke was excellent in the lineout.".
Martin Hope, Rumney RFC : "A good game, if a bit stop-start in places, the whole team showed fine ball handling skills. Rumney were well drilled and well led by Neil Coles and I very much like the look of Mike Thomas at outside half. A thoroughly enjoyable game to watch".
Scorers for Rumney : Nathan Paul 2 tries, Neil Coles 2 tries, Simon Grainger try, Michael Feneck try, Michael Kelly 2 tries, Craig Hill try, Matthew Miller 2 tries, Graham Burke try, Michael Thomas 6 conversions

Colin Willis, Rumney RFC : "The atrocious conditions didn't
favour Rumney as we like to spread it wide but the boys stuck
to the task and scored some fantastic tries. It was uphill in
the second half and playing with the wind we kept it tight at
first but cut loose when we were in the opposition's twenty two".

Scorer for Rumney : Matthew Payne try
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "A good competitive game with Newport being physically the stronger. Rumney tried their best but could not match them for weight and size. A good performance from Rumney though, they never gave in !".

Cwmbran Youth 7 Rumney Youth 17
Scorers for Rumney : P.O'Neill 2 tries, M.Thomas drop goal and 2 conversions
Colin Willis, Rumney RFC : "It was hard work against a very well drilled set of forwards, the Cwmbran pack is one of the best in Wales. Rumney came from 7- nil down at half time and turned thyem over in the driving wind and rain. We have a very young side and were unlucky to lose Chris Harper, Matthew Payne and Rhys Williams with injuries but all the boys played magnificently, the running and tackling was outstanding. Paddy O'Neill came in on the wing and had a stunning game, as did Michael Feneck who played at prop and never flinched. Michael Thomas and Gareth Thomas had excellent games and so did Paul Niblett playing his first full game for Rumney Youth."
Scorers for Rumney Veterans:
Wayne Barry try, Mark Painter pen
Scorer for Rumney Youth: Chris Harper try
Steve Elliott, Captain Rumney Vets "A good game, they were all heroes. Veterans man of the match Wayne 'Bazil' Barry. I'll have a rethink on that, man of the match Andy Jones because it's his birthday".
Wayne Barry, Rumney Veteran "The Youth played the tactics of running at the big ones in the veterans side, but all our training worked and we had plenty of stamina. I took advantage of a one eyed referee to score a try in the corner - I knew he could only see one way. I believe our scrum half may have been undercover from the Youth".
RUMNEY YOUTH V YNYSDDU YOUTH

Scorers for Rumney : Matthew Miller try, David Evans try, Rhys Williams try, Matthew Kelly try, Simon Granger try, Neil Coles try, Michael Thomas try and 6 conversions.
Dai Thomas, Coach Rumney Youth : "This was a very good Ynysddu side and it was a hard battle, particularly in the first half. Once again the Rumney back row and front row were outstanding. Young Martin Young at scrum half really enhanced his reputation as did outside half Michael Thomas and Matthew Miller on the wing and Craig Hill and Chris Coles in the centre all had excellent games".
Simon Granger, Rumney Youth : "It was a good game but Rumney started poorly. Michael Thomas showed a lot of enterprise at outside half. The back row were taking great crash ball from Michael and his individual try was the try of the game !".

Dai Thomas, Rumney RFC : "Rumney ran the ball from everywhere and full credit to Dunvant for making a good game of it. For Rumney Simon Grainger, Neil Coles, Michael Feneck, Michael Thomas and Jamie Hall all had outstanding games !"

Michael Thomas, outside half Rumney Youth : "It was a hard game. We kept going and an extremely good pack won us the game. (Apart from myself) Neil Coles, Simon Granger, Michael Kelly, Michael Feneck and Matthew Payne had brilliant games and Matthew Payne came in off the wing to scrum half and played superbly".

Colin Willis, Rumney RFC :
"Bettws came to Rumney really wanting a win and we were
under heavy pressure for
the first ten minutes but the defence was superb and then we really
started playing. Even the All Blacks would have been proud of
this performance !".

Neil Coles, Rumney Youth : We took Dunvant on up front and
our defence was superb. I caught the ball fifteen yards out and
we drove over the line for the first try and then Matthew Miller
scored our second with a strong run down the wing following a
classic backs move. Simon Granger got Rumney's third try from
a good back row move".
Simon Granger, Rumney Youth : It was a hard, physical game with good handling from the backs all the way through. It was a big improvement on our last game with the forwards rucking particularly well. Neil Coles had an outstanding game".

Dai Thomas, Youth Coach Rumney RFC : "The game was won in the back row - it was an immense performance from S. Granger in particular and also N. Coles and W. Storey. M. Thomas's tackling was superb. We were up against a big pack but it was a good overall, gutsy performance".
Scorers for Rumney : M. Miller 2 tries, G. Thomas 1 try, M. Kelly 1 try, N. Coles 1 try, M. Thomas 4 conversions. Dai Thomas, Youth Coach Rumney RFC : "Bad weather conditions influenced the game. There was a purple patch for Rumney in the first half when all our tries and points were scored. A good performance".
Scorers for Rumney : Christian Coles 1 try, Gareth Thomas 1 try, Michael Thomas 2 tries and 4 conversions. Dai Thomas, Youth Coach Rumney RFC : "Avery good game between two strong sides. The Merthyr forwards dominated for long periods but a young Rumney side came through to win a very good match".
